3 Tips for Being an Actress Over 60

May 2, 2022 by Ina

If there’s one stereotype that most people can agree on about Hollywood, it’s that youth is everything. If you think of some of your favorite films, most of the leading characters are young 20-somethings who are incredibly attractive with washboard abs.  Being over 60 can be especially challenging in Hollywood when you’re a woman. It’s no secret that Hollywood is less forgiving of aging actresses than they are of male actors. So, if you’re looking for ways to have a successful career over the age of 60, then take a look at some of the best tips for how to do it.

Know Your Stuff

One thing is for sure—if you’re a talented actor, usually you can shine regardless of your age. All you have to do is continue knocking on doors, and eventually, someone will see your light.

However, it’s going to be that much more difficult to find roles if you’re older, and you’re not really that great of an actor. So get to know all the latest methodologies, and know your craft. Take acting lessons, watch videos, and watch all of the films that you can get your hands on. Knowledge is power, so if you become an expert in your field, age can’t possibly stand in your way.

Create an Awesome Demo Reel

If you’re new to Hollywood, then it’s important that you know that every actor is expected to create a demo reel. The purpose of it is to serve as your business card, and convince people why you’re the right person for the job. A great demo reel can make a world of difference in finding jobs by showcasing your best talents.

Demo reels are a great way to show people how strong your onscreen presence is, and can be a determining factor in whether you’re hired for an acting job or not. So, it’s worth investing some money into creating a fantastic demo reel that makes you shine as much as possible. Scrapping something together on a budget is not really investing in your career.

Loosen Up

Most actors have been there before, they were totally prepared for reading at an audition, only to find that once they’re in front of the audition panel they freeze up. Don’t let your nerves get in the way of your talent. One of the most important things you should do as an actor of any age is to loosen up and take deep breaths before you go in to do your reading. The truth is that there are fewer rules available to you after a certain age. So when you get your shot to go in and read for something, give it your all and loosen up beforehand. If you’re not familiar with relaxation techniques, then now would be a great time to get started!
