Since the days when twiggy first walked the runway, becoming a stick figure with bumps or being ultra thin has become more than just a fashion. It has become an obsession for quite a portion of the female population. Some feel that it is inspired by fashion and the women (and men) of Hollywood such as Kate Bosworth, Keira Knightley and Nicole Richie.
In fact the announcement of Diane von Furstenberg, in her capacity as president of the Council of Fashion Designers came on the heels of the discovery of Richie’s weight of 85 lbs.? The US fashion industry is being encouraged to take a stand on the issue of underweight models just as Madrid, Brazil and Milan have. In these fashion centres, any model with a body mass index (BMI)? below 18 is banned from the runway. This? figure would take supermodel Kate Moss off the ramp.
As von Furstenburg wrote in her letter, “as designers, we cannot ignore the impact fashion has on body image. We share a responsibility to protect women, and very young girls in particular, within the industry.”
