This year has not been kind to our Hollywood stars, and now, another Hollywood icon is battling a serious disease. Dennis Hopper, who is now 73 years old, is dealing with prostate cancer. He is currently undergoing treatment under a special program at the University of South California.

More on his condition from The Telegraph:

The Hollywood actor, who has been married five times and has four children, has cancelled all travel plans so he could focus on treatment, Mr Maydew said. “We’re hoping for the best,” his manager told the entertainment website E! Online. He declined to comment further.

Hopper was due to visit Australia next month for the opening of a Melbourne exhibition, Dennis Hopper and the New Hollywood. He said he was “very disappointed” at not being able to travel to Australia for the exhibition, a collection of his artwork and photography, at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image in Melbourne.

Born in May 17, 1936, Dennis Hopper has established a name for himself worldwide in the realms of acting and filmmaking. He is best known for works such as Rebel Without A Cause, Easy Rider, and Speed – among many others. Unbeknownst to many, Dennis Hopper is also active in other pursuits aside from the big screen. He is an avid photographer, painter, and sculptor. As a matter of fact, his work is scattered in exhibits all over the world.

For now, this artist is battling perhaps one of the biggest challenges in his life. Our prayers are with him, together with the hopes that he conquers this disease much like he conquered every thing else in his life.

To DearDennis,i am an up and coming pop artist (neo-pop) here on the island of Maui. I have always admired your work, as an actor, director, photographer, and i have always wanted to do my own humble rendering of you. Being a child of the 50s and 60s , i have run along side you, as in my early Hollywood and Sunset strip days…..San Francisco hippy days…..Carmel, and Monterey Photography days, ala Weston , Adams etc. then on to New York and my meeting with Andy Warhol, and now doing my own art out of my little factory west here in Lahaina…..today i begin my painting of you Dennis, with all my ALOHA. MAHALO, Davo.

Dennis, May God bless you and keep you as healthy as
possible, for as long as possible. Unfortunately I need to “speak my mind” about the lack of original and quality films being churned out of Hollywood. Aside from the Inde. Market, I get that movies like
Avatar will break the bank, but what about “real stories”? What about movies for intelligent people, adults, and leaving us in a resonating awe? I’ve been stuck in the “classic film” isle in every DVD rental store that’s left, because I’d rather watch “THEY DRIVE BY NIGHT” fifty times, than to pay $12.50 for crap. I’ve made a deal with myself, to get rid of my flatscreen TV, and stay away from movie theaters By March 2011, if the entertainment business doesn’t improve, and I will recruit others to do so as well. My favorite actors are dead and the actors who are living today are stale and bone dry, as are the stories and screenplays. Sorry, that’s how I feel, and I have no regrets saying it.
